Classification of Plants

Classification of Plants

1. All green plants can make their own food in the presence of sunlight, water and

carbon dioxide. This is possible because green plants contain chlorophyll.

2. Plants are fixed in one position. They respond slowly to changes around them,

e.g. the leaves of the plants grow towards sunlight.

3. There are also carnivorous plants that can make food but receive extra nutrients

by feeding on insects. Examples of such plants are :

a. Venus flytrap b. Pitcher plant

c. Sundew d. Bladderwort

Tip #1 : How To Remember Carnivorous Plants

Very Frightening : Venus Flytrap

Plants : Pitcher plant

Swallow : Sundew

Body : Bladderwort

4. Plants have different plant parts such as the roots, stems, leaves, flowers and

fruits.

5. However, to be considered as a plant, the 3 main plant parts are only the roots,

stems and leaves.

Leaf Edges

6. Leaves can have entire, toothed ( jagged ) or lobed edges.

7. Examples of entire edge leaves include the periwinkle, grass and frangipani.

8. Examples of toothed-edge ( jagged edge ) leaves include the rose, hibiscus and

balsam.

9. Examples of lobed edge leaves include the maple, papaya and sweet potato.

Vein Pattern

10. Different leaves have different vein patterns. Some have network veins while

others have parallel veins.

Tip #2 : How To Remember Leaves With Network Veins

In computer terms, we equate networking as in LAN.

Lantana : LAN

Guava : Guy

Duckweed : Dug

Angsana : Another

Bougainvillea/Balsam : Bag of

Rose : Rose

Hibiscus : Hibiscus &

Sunflower : Sunflower for

Pong pong : Pretty Princess

Tip #3 : How To Remember Leaves With Parallel Veins

The word “parallel” is used mostly in Mathematics

under the chapter of Geometry.

Maize : Mathematics

Grass : Geometry

Lily : Listen &

Lalang : Learn

Tulip : Too

Bamboo : Bad !!

Arrangement of Flowers

11. The flowers of some plants grow singly. Examples include the rose, hibiscus and

tulip.

12. Some flowers grow in bunches and some in clusters. The orchids, frangipani and

oleander grow in bunches, while the flame of the forest and ixora grow in clusters.

Water Plants

1. Plants that grow in water are called water plants or aquatic plants.

2. These plants grow either in freshwater or seawater.

3. They are classified into :

a. floating plants

b. partially submerged plants

c. totally submerged plants

Tip #9 : How To Remember Floating Water Plants

Water hyacinth : sounds like “higher”cinth

“higher” means above; so must be floating water plant

Water lettuce : Equate the word “lettuce” to “letters”

Imagine that you are folding a love letter into a boat and letting this boat float on the water surface

Duckweed : Think of “duck” that floats above the water

Water moss fern : water > water

moss > must

fern > float
